DB details high-speed tunnel planning as minister throws weight behind project

Deutsche Bahn has made changes to its planning for the construction of a new high-speed rail tunnel below the city centre of Frankfurt in a bid to streamline and speed up the effort. Meanwhile Federal Minister of Transport Volker Wissing is publicly backing the project, which carries an estimated price tag of at least 3.5 billion euro.

In the interim, they could divert more trains along the direct rail route (which has a better alignment) towards Frankfurt Süd: well connected, but underused. It is only occasionally used for ICE services towards Frankfurt-am-Main Airport, but Frankfurt Süd station is only marginally further away from the Innenstadt and Altstadt. Routes such as Cologne-Frankfurt Airport-Frankfurt-Würzburg-Nuremberg-Münich, or Berlin-Halle-Erfurt-Frankfurt-Mannheim-Freiburg-Basel would be a few minutes quicker.
