Infrabel progress on new track between Ghent and Bruges

New tracks being built Infrabel

The improvement of railway infrastructure between Ghent and Bruges is becoming increasingly urgent, given the growing demand for both passenger and freight transport in the region. With as many as 250 trains traversing this route daily, it is clear that there is a need for a more efficient and optimised railway network. Infrabel is therefore building a third and fourth track between Ghent and Bruges.

At present, slow freight trains and fast-moving passenger trains share the same tracks, leading to delays and congestion, especially during busy periods such as the summer months when coastal tourism peaks. To accommodate this growing demand for transport and improve efficiency, work is underway to construct a third and fourth track between Ghent and Bruges. With this expansion, trains will be able to operate more smoothly, with fast trains on the middle tracks and slower trains on the outer tracks, avoiding interference and enabling smoother flow.

The works include the construction of two additional tracks between Ghent and Bruges, with the existing tracks placed between the new ones. Additionally, improvements are being made to 7 stations along the route, including Drongen, Hansbeke, Bellem, Maria-Aalter, Aalter, Beernem, and Oostkamp, with upgrades to platforms, access points, bicycle parking, and other facilities in collaboration with NMBS. Along the stretches where additional tracks are being created, adjustments are being made to roads, railway installations, and fences, with consideration for the living environment of residents, including sound barriers where necessary.

Recently completed projects include the construction of new ring canal bridges and the Snepkaai between Ghent and Landegem, as well as the renewal and reorganisation of Drongen station. All level crossings along the entire route between Ghent and Bruges have been replaced, and bridges above the railway line have been renewed and adapted. Additionally, the station surroundings of Oostkamp, Maria-Aalter, and Aalter have been renewed and elevated. The financing of these projects is supported in part by the European Union, taking a significant step towards improving railway infrastructure and promoting efficient and sustainable transport in the region.
