New boost for British hydrogen train programme
The British hydrogen train programme received a new financial impetus. Eversholt Rail and Alstom will jointly invest an additional 1.1 million euros in the project. Britain’s first hydrogen train nicknamed as the Breeze is expected to be rolled out at earliest in 2022.
French manufacturer Alstom and British rolling stock company Eversholt Rail demonstrated a concept of the British fist hydrogen train more than a year and a half. Now, both partners are moving further. On Wednesday, 22 July, they declared their intention to additionally invest 1 million British pounds (around 1.1 million euros) in the project. This investment will be provided in order to make the unveiled concept real. “It’s time to jump-start the UK hydrogen revolution,” said Nick Crossfield, Managing Director at Alstom UK & Ireland.
The joint concept of Alstom and Eversholt Rail, which is known as the Breeze, is based on Class 321 electric trains. Alstom is planning to build the Breeze hydrogen train at its Widnes Transport Technology Centre, which is fast becoming the UK’s premier centre for train modernisation. This project will create over 200 high-quality engineering jobs in North West England. Earlier, both partners announced that the British first hydrogen train could be rolled out at earliest in 2022.
“When powered by green hydrogen, these trains offer true zero-emission mobility, not just zero-emission at point of use. The only emission from a hydrogen train is water; it produces no harmful particulates or gaseous emissions,” Alstom stated. As the Breeze train is innovative, it will receive a new class, beginning with a 6. The 600 series will be reserved for alternative traction like hydrogen, and as the Breeze is the first of this type, it will have the first number, 600.
