Infographic for the European Year of Rail
The European Commission has declared 2021 the European Year of Rail. Despite the many advantages of the train, only about 7 percent of passengers and 11 percent of goods are transported by rail. The European Commission wants to change this with several milestones this year. RailTech made an infographic with the focal points of this special year.
A recent monitoring study by the Commission shows that the market share of rail compared to other land passenger transport has remained stuck at around 7.8 percent between 2015 and 2018. Despite a slight annual growth of 2.5 percent in passenger transport by rail, there is no sign of a modal shift towards rail, in passenger transport. The growth of freight transport by rail is also lagging behind and even slightly decreased in that time.
The European Commission considers this a bad thing and has therefore set several milestones to increase the market share of passenger and freight transport by rail. This should also contribute to the objectives of the European Green Deal to reduce CO2 emissions through sustainable mobility.
RailTech made an infographic in which the various objectives and the added value of the railway compared to other modalities is shown. This infographic can be downloaded for free here.
