Polish long-distance trains equipped with energy meters
PKP Intercity, the Polish incumbent operator of the long-distance trains, improved energy efficiency of its trains. The company’s entire fleet of electric multiple units and electric locomotives was equipped with 316 energy meters. With the help of the devices, will obtain more accurate data about its energy consumption.
All the energy measuring devices were provided to PKP Intercity by the Polish engineering company SESTO. In April 2019 they concluded the related agreement, which is valued at 5.8 million zlotys (around 1.4 million euros). SESTO installed 316 energy meters of EM3000 type in electric trainsets and locomotives of the railway undertaking.
Moreover, the supplier implemented the monitoring system of energy consumption, power supply parameters and vehicle tracking in real-time. According to the agreement, SESTO will provide maintenance and servicing services for these solutions for a period of 48 months since their commissioning.
The investment in energy meters will allow PKP Intercity to better count the energy consumption. Before this, the company paid for the approximate volume of the consumed traction energy, calculated on a forecast basis of the transport performance. This will eventually help the railway operator to reduce energy consumption.
“We have obtained a tool to identify the actual consumption of electricity and potential options for reducing its consumption. Thanks to the meters, it will be possible to perform a full analysis of the energy consumption on the selected routes, as well as the rolling stock we use,” said Adam Laskowski, Member of the company’s Board.
