Smoother ERTMS deployment in southern Sweden

Sweden’s rail infrastructure manager Trafikverket has corrected a time frame of its ERTMS programme. The deployment of the new signalling solution in the southern regions will start in 2023 as it had been scheduled earlier. Its end was postponed for two years until 2029 to provide the smoother installation works.

Trafikverket made the decision after the consultations with the train operators. The new time frame influences three main lines in southern Sweden: from Stockholm to Hallsberg via Katrineholm, from Stockholm to Malmö and to Denmark via Mjölby, as well as and the route from Trelleborg to Göteborg and to Kornsjö (the border with Norway) via Helsingborg. At the same time, the rail infrastructure manager notes that the new time frame will not increase the project cost.

The two-year delay will provide the smoother modernisation of the train fleet and its replacement for the railway undertakings. This also takes into account the ongoing infrastructure projects including those ones around Hallsberg which could have a major impact on the train traffic. “We have an ongoing dialogue with stakeholders of the rail sector and we take care of their input into our work. We also need to relate to other ongoing infrastructure projects of Trafikverket. We also create an extra buffer for implementation,” said Patrik Assarsjö, Trafikverket’s manager who is responsible for upgrading the railway network.

ERTMS deployments

According to Trafikverket, all the wishes of railway operators have been taken into account in the newly updated programme. For instance, some major train stations that are important for both mainline and regional traffic will be equipped with ERTMS later than the railways between them.

The programme will start with deploying ERTMS on the Nässjö – Alvesta section in 2023. However, both termini will receive the new signalling solution in 2025. The Alvesta – Hässleholm and the Hässleholm – Malmö lines will be equipped with ERTMS in 2024 and 2025 while the works at the Hässleholm railway station will be finished in 2026. The same situation has been scheduled on the sections from Malmö to Göteborg and the Norwegian border.
