Hamburg S-Bahn to equip all stations with free Wi-Fi
By autumn 2019, 50 stations of Hamburg S-Bahn will be equipped with free Wi-Fi connection. An investment of 4 million Euros allows the completion of the Wi-Fi installation in urban rail stations, covering the entire S-Bahn network.
The Wi-Fi connection in Hamburg S-Bahn stations will be installed in cooperation with Hamburger Hochbahn, operator of the metro system Hamburg U-Bahn, as well as German telecommunications company wilhelm.tel, provider of the free Wi-Fi network in Hamburg Mobyclick. The cooperation allows unifying the wireless internet in three modes of public transport (urban rail, metro and bus). This allows passengers to be online without reconnecting to Wi-Fi when changing to the metro or bus.
Wi-Fi in Hamburg public transport
Two years ago, wilhelm.tel started testing wireless internet in public buses operated by Hamburger Hochbahn. 18 S-Bahn stations and 90 metro stations have already been equipped with free Wi-Fi. Hamburg U-Bahn passengers can use wireless internet all around the metro network, except tunnels. Hamburger Hochbahn is working on fixing that problem. In general, Hamburg has more than 2,000 access points to free Wi-Fi in public areas.
