Siemens Mobility presents Mireo, their most energy-efficient regional train

Mireo presentation at TRAKO Siemens Mobility

Siemens Mobility officially presented its regional vehicle from the Mireo platform for the first time during TRAKO 2023, in Gdansk, Poland, on 19 September 2023. The Mireo is heralded by Siemens as one of the most energy-efficient and standardised electric multiple units available in Europe.

The Mireo commuter train’s remarkable energy efficiency is achieved through a lightweight, welded, integrated aluminium shell structure. Improved aerodynamics, energy-efficient components, and an intelligent onboard network management system further contribute to reduced resource consumption, lower emissions, and a quieter travel experience. The train has been in operation on the Lausitz network in the German Lusatia region since December 2022, traversing routes close to the Polish border with Frankfurt (Oder) and Cottbus.

Mireo features

It boasts speeds of up to 160 kilometers per hour, and traction power of up to 2.6 MW. With 180 seats (10 in first class and 170 in second class), the train is equipped with onboard internet access, charging stations for electric bicycles, electric sockets featuring integrated USB charging ports, inductive charging at tables with vis-à-vis seating, and a dedicated first-class compartment. Moreover, the Mireo prioritises accessibility, featuring a disabled-accessible toilet, space for 15 bicycles, a CCTV camera system, large passenger information displays, and windows equipped with a special radio signal amplification coating, enhancing mobile phone reception during the journey.

The operation of the Mireo can lead to a substantial reduction in electricity consumption, according to Siemens up to 20 percent less compared to vehicles with similar parameters. Siemens Mobility aims to set a new standard for regional transport on Polish tracks, which comes as a positive development given the rising electricity costs. Hubert Meronk, CEO of Siemens Mobility Polska, expressed his enthusiasm, stating: “In the face of rising electricity costs, Siemens Mobility is setting a new standard for regional transport on Polish tracks.”

Siemens Mobility has already sold 216 Mireo vehicles to carriers across Europe. In September, the company inked a framework agreement for the delivery of 540 Mireo units to Austrian Railways (ÖBB). Beyond the standard electric versions of the Mireo, Siemens Mobility is also advancing battery and hydrogen-powered vehicles based on the same platform. These innovative vehicles are expected to debut with passengers as early as early 2024.
