A ‘virtual testing ground’ to test the locomotive control system of new trains is Sinara Transport Machines’s latest project. With it, the Russian company wants to speed up the process of developing new locomotives.

The testing technology is being developed by Sinara and a team of the mechanical engineers of the Ural Federal University. By virtually testing locomotives, it should optimise the development time of a new vehicle by 30 percent.

The projec is scheduled to be completed in November 2021. In the future, the virtual testing ground technology will be extended to all promising products of Sinara, including the line of urban public transport.

Digital twin of a locomotive

The project is aimed at improving the development and launching of locomotive control systems. The virtual testing will ensure end-to-end design and coordination of all requirements when creating rolling stock. “Virtual test technology is an integral part of the digital twin of a locomotive”, commented Kirill Kolesnikov, firstdeputy general director of Sinara.” By applying the virtual testing ground, Sinara can timely make adjustments to the design documentation, clarify the financial and operational model during the design and production of the locomotive.

The most important is that they can manage the development process, optimising work costs, ensure the production of high-quality and competitive vehicles, says the company.

“These technologies help analyse various operational scenarios and reduce the time and cost of the development”, said Igor Manzhurov, Director for Development of the Ural Interregional project ‘Advanced Manufacturing Technologies and Materials’. “This way, we can observe how a technological groundwork is being created that has no analogues in Russia and neighboring countries.”
