Adif commits 52.8 million euros to renovate the 43-kilometre track section between Bobadilla and Ronda, on the 176-kilometre-long conventional railway line connecting Bobadilla and Algeciras. This initiative marks the completion of crucial track renewal works on this strategic line, as part of a larger modernization plan.

The project entails replacing all track elements, including ballast, sleepers, and rails, along the section with higher-performance materials. Additionally, the dimensions of overpasses will be adjusted to accommodate future electrification equipment and poles, while infrastructure and drainage systems along the route will be reinforced.

The contract for these works has been awarded to the joint venture formed by Tecsa and Dragados. This effort will finalise the track renewal across the entire line, following works completed on the Ronda-San Pablo, San Pablo-Almoraima (first phase, with the second phase already contracted), and Almoraima-Algeciras sections.

Comprehensive renewal of a strategic line

Adif progresses with the comprehensive renewal plan for the Bobadilla-Algeciras line, which includes the implementation of a third rail, electrification, and the expansion of sidings. These interventions will enhance the reliability and capacity of the infrastructure to accommodate increased traffic, primarily freight, on this strategic line: it connects with the largest in the country, Algeciras Bay, will handle traffic from the Algeciras-Zaragoza Rail Motorway services and serves as a cornerstone for the Atlantic and Mediterranean corridors.

Adif has already mobilised around 70 per cent of the investment for the comprehensive renewal plan, amounting to 472 million euros. While track renewal is underway, progress is also being made in other areas of modernization. In terms of systems renewal, the installation of GSM-R mobile telecommunications and automatic block (a system ensuring distance between trains) on the Bobadilla-Ronda section is in progress, having been completed between Ronda and Algeciras.

Modernization works for signalling between Ronda and Algeciras have also been contracted, including the implementation of the Anuncio de Señales y Frenado Automático (ASFA) or Digital Train Protection System. Lastly, finalisation of the electrification project for the Ronda-Algeciras route is underway. This initiative may be co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
