DB’s new high-speed train begins testing abroad
The new ICE 3neo high-speed rolling stock, which Deutsche Bahn (DB) entered into service in Germany last December, will begin testing in the Netherlands, Dutch Railways (NS) announced late last week. The trains are slated to make their debut on the Amsterdam-Frankfurt connection some time in 2024.
DB has ordered a total of 90 ICE 3neo train sets with Siemens Mobility. The first batch was ordered in 2020, with the most recent addition of 17 units placed earlier this year. That deal, announced in May, was valued at around 600 million euros.
The first ICE 3neo made its debut last December between Frankfurt and Cologne, a mere 2,5 years following the placement of the first train order. Later that month, the service offering also included the route from Dortmund all the way to Munich using the new Wendligen–Ulm high-speed section.
Next year, the ICE 3neo is scheduled to make its debut in the Netherlands and Belgium. Trials planned for this summer include testing the train’s various systems and their ability to cope with the Dutch infrastructure, NS writes. Siemens Mobility and DB are partners in these tests.
The ICE 3neo has a top speed of 320 kilometres per hour and can accommodate 439 seated passengers. The final train sets will come off the assembly line in 2028, Siemens says. Once all units are incorporated in the time table, travellers between Hamburg and Berlin, Berlin and Munich, Berlin and Frankfurt and between the capital and the cities in the Ruhr area will all be able to make use of the ICE 3neo.
