Demonstrators marching in la Maurienne valley Les Soulevements de la Terre

Around 2,000 demonstrators gathered in the Maurienne valley in Savoie, France, to protest against the construction of a rail link including a tunnel under the Alps between Lyon and Turin. Activists expressed their concern regarding environmental degradation in the area and the high cost of the project. Twelve police officers were injured when the demonstration escalated into violence on Saturday 17 June 2023.
