Adif details plans for Barcelona Sants station overhaul

2022, Adif

Adif unveiled its preliminary plans for the new Barcelona Sants station. The Spanish infrastructure will place a premium on sustainability, with expected energy savings of almost 50 compared to similar structures.

Adif will install 14,000 square metres worth of solar panels, use natural materials with a small CO2-footprint and focus on natural ventilation and lighting. On colder days, the station will mainly use waste heat from platforms.

According to Adif, Barcelona Sants will become the new reference for intermodal hubs, as both Rodiales and high-speed services will call at the station. Each will have their separate arrival and departure areas. Works to that end will start mid-2024 and will be wrapped up in august 2025. Municipal works in the immediate surroundings of the station will be carried out from year-end 2023 until well into 2026.

Particular attention will also be paid to last-mile solutions, such as bicycles, scooters and zero-emission vehicles. There will be additional parking spaces and bicycle lanes.
