Sweden gets European loan for new regional trains

source: Stadler

The European Investment Bank (EIB) and transport company Transito agreed on a loan to finance 12 new electric double-decker trains. The loan concerns 480 million Swedish kroner, equivalent to 47.3 million euros.

The money will be used to replace outdated rolling stock. Transito will make the trains available to the transport company Mälardalstrafik MÄLAB via a lease construction. The new trains should improve the reliability, punctuality and comfort of transport in the Stockholm area and on Lake Mälaren. This should convince travellers to opt for the train more often, according to EIB and Transito.

Purchase of new double-deckers

“The purchase of 12 new double-deckers will enable us to facilitate regional rail transport around Stockholm even better. In this way we are contributing to the goal of getting more people on the train”, says Transito Director Magnus von Bahr.

“Sweden already leads the way when it comes to generating renewable energy, so more clean transport is a logical next step”, said EIB Vice-President Thomas Östros.

The order for the trains was placed with Stadler in 2020. The first trains are to be delivered this autumn, it was announced at the time. The double-deckers have a top speed of 200 kilometres per hour.
