RegioJet to use double-decker trains on regional line in Slovakia

Source: Wikipedia

Czech open-access railway operator RegioJet plans to increase the capacity of its busiest regional service in Slovakia. Starting on the 2nd September, the company will start to operate two five-car double-decker trains on the Bratislava – Dunajská Streda – Komárno single-track route. The vehicles will be purchased from DB Regio.

The German double-deckers will be used by RegioJet during the morning and afternoon rush hours. They will serve the early connection from Dunajská Streda to Bratislava with a departure on weekdays at 6:15 hour. The double-decker wagons will increase the capacity on the Bratislava – Dunajská Streda – Komárno route for 100 additional seats. Currently, RegioJet is working on receiving the approval from the Slovak national infrastructure manager ŽSR for the German cars to be operated on the country’s network.

Bratislava – Komárno line

The Bratislava – Dunajská Streda – Komárno is the busiest single-track and non-electrified line in Slovakia. In 2018 RegioJet carried 3.6 million passengers on it that is 1 million passengers more than the year before. The 100-kilometre route has around 30 stops. The travel time between Bratislava and Komárno, located on the Hungarian border, usually takes more than two hours. The trains run between the termini every hour in each direction with 20-minute intervals during the rush hours. The popularity of the route is caused by the active construction of new residential areas in the surroundings of Bratislava.

Double-deck competition

RegioJet will become the pioneer in Slovakia to use the double-deck wagons on the regional route. Now, the double-deckers cars in Czechia and Slovakia are operated only on the mainlines. They serve the routes of the state-owned rail operators České dráhy and ZSSK. The double-deckers primarily serve the Prague – Ostrava route in Czechia and the Žilina – Košice line in Slovakia.
