As global concerns about climate change grow, the transportation sector faces a crucial challenge in reducing its carbon footprint, and rail infrastructure firms are playing and increasingly important role in improving the emissions profile of the sector. Through its work upgrading railway tracks, Belgian rail firm Vanormelingen-Stas sees a number of positive impacts for the sector.

Jasper Peeters, Head of Operations, at the firm notes: “By maintaining and upgrading railway tracks, we want to cooperate towards a greener environment by supporting the modal shift to the railway sector and as a result have both passenger and freight transport increasingly rely on trains.”

The firm is currently engaged in four major projects across Belgium to bolster the country’s rail sector. These include upgrades to Track B in Herent, enhancing safety and rail operations, and the renewal of rails along Line 19 between Neerpelt and Hamont that will take place from May to July 2023, boosting network reliability. Longer term, the firm is also constructing new tracks in Herentals (for a new railway bridge), in the province of Antwerp, and Montzen, close to the borders of the Netherlands and Germany. Both these projects are ongoing and set for completion by the end of 2023.

Ambitious next steps

Looking further ahead, Vanormelingen-Stas has ambitious plans for future major projects. Starting in September 2023, they will embark on a project to replace 55 switches in Antwerp Nord and then in November 2023, the company will begin sifting ballast and renewing sleepers on line 13 at Lint using a renewal train and sifter. Both projects are expected to showcase the firm’s ongoing dedication to enhancing Belgium’s rail infrastructure and promoting sustainable transportation.

“By introducing more efficient rail tracks, we aim to decrease the reliance on truck transportation, leading to a positive impact on CO2 emissions,” Peeters adds. “Maintaining and renewing railway infrastructure is a crucial step in facilitating the shift towards greener transportation, helping our government achieve its ambitious climate goals.”

Founded in the late 1970s by Leopold Peeters, the company acquired railway contractor Vanormelingen-Stas NV in 1996. Since 2003, the firm has been part of the Railco Group. Under governance of our managing directors, Geert en Ellen Peeters, it is ambitious to keep growing and become a recognised contractor within the world of the rail.
