ÖBB starts expansion project of eastern railway

ÖBB on Wednesday commenced with the expansion of the so-called Ostbahn from Vienna to the border with Slovakia. The line will be upgraded to a double-track one, while stations along the route will receive an upgrade.

On June 8, work got underway between Vienna Aspern Nord and Siebenbrunn-Leopoldsdorf with the construction of new drainage ditches and the installation of a second set of tracks. In a later stage of construction, two underpasses will be built at Schönfeld-Lassee station and in Breitensee.

From June 25 onwards, construction will begin at Marchegg station and along the route to the Slovakian border. For this reason, cross-border railway traffic will be suspended and replaced by a shuttle bus service until July 11.

In autumn 2022, the middle section of the Ostbahn between Schönfeld-Lassee and Marchegg will be expanded.
