Russian Railways revamps electronic train tickets

Russian Railways introduced a new design for electronic train tickets. It was developed according to the wishes of the passengers. The upgraded tickets are much more informative and personalised. They contain many pictograms that allow the passengers to faster find necessary information about the onboard services and other options.

Since early July, the passengers travelling by the trains of Russian Railways (RZD) are able to use the new, revamped electronic tickets. They could be purchased via the company’s mobile application known as ‘RZD passazhiram’ (‘RZD to passengers’ in Russian). By the end of July, the Russian company plans to make this option available on its official website. The upgraded electronic tickets for international trains will be introduced later. RZD expects to do this during the autumn. To this end, the company needs to adjust some issues with foreign counterparts.

Better usability

The revamped ticket was developed by Art. Lebedev Studio, a well-known Russian design agency, in line with the wishes of the passengers. “Сlear and convenient,” the company described the main features of the new tickets. They contain many pictograms that show the available onboard services in accordance with the train’s type or its class. There is also a picture that instructs the passengers where they are able to place their luggage. This image varies regarding the gender and age of the customer.

The upgraded tickets also contain the exact address of a train station with the nearby metro stations. It is important for passengers departing from the big cities, which have many stations. There are some features for customers who prefer to print electronic tickets. In this case, the travelling document could be folded twice or quadruple to place it in a pocket or passport. At the same time, the main information remains visible (see the picture above).

Blocks of information

All information on the new ticket is divided into three main blocks: data on a passenger and a trip, data on fare and class of service, instructions for boarding a train. The passenger and journey data (surname and initials, train, carriage and place number, time, date and departure station, address of the departure station) are typed in large print (see the picture below). For international trains, the documents will be issued in two languages: Russian and English. As for foreign travellers, they will be able to order the electronic tickets fully in English.

The second block of information contains a detailed description of the fare and class of service. It mainly consists of pictures and pictograms that inform the passengers about the available onboard services: air-conditioning, catering, a travel kit, etc. If there is an option for carrying pets, the ticket will contain a pictogram in the form of animals. The third block was developed in order to facilitate the boarding process. Its key feature is a big picture that shows how and where to place luggage.
