DB Regio, a subsidiary of Deutsche Bahn, is moving further in digitalising its operations. This time the company has introduced the digital solution for planning and dispatching its services. The new system is applicable for five regions, two Regio networks and four commuter railway services.

The German regional railway operator has implemented the integrated planning and dispatch system (iPD). It was delivered by German IT company IVU Traffic Technologies. With the help of the new system, DB Regio is able to plan and dispatch over 700,000 train kilometres per day in IVU.rail integrated solution. The innovation was implemented together with the new timetable in December 2019.

For a few months, the joint expert team of DB Regio and IVU Traffic Technologies was working on the introduction of the system in regular service. At the moment, DB Regio uses the iPD system for planning and dispatching in the regions of Bayern, Baden-Württemberg, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Nordost and Mitte as well as for S-Bahn connections in Frankfurt, Hamburg, Munich and Stuttgart.

iPD system

“iPD is an important milestone on the path to becoming more modern and robust”, said Oliver Terhaag, DB Regio’s production executive. It provides an opportunity for individual regional and commuter railway service networks to plan and dispatch staff and vehicles in a single system. The iPD solution automatically maps all changes to schedules and scheduling cycles in the duty allocation system, checks that alert dispatch managers in the event of conflicts provide assurance. All data are always available to every area of work involved.

“The introduction of this kind of system in so many control centres at once represents a mammoth task. We are delighted to have taken this important step, and, together with IVU, we will now work on exploiting the full potential of this application,” noted Christoph Fibranz, the project manager responsible at DB Regio.
