Within the modernisation project, Central Rail Line in Poland, the high-speed railway that connects Warsaw with Krakow and Katowice, will be equipped with ERTMS Level 2 system. The solution will be installed by the consortium of Bombardier Transportation (ZWUS) Polska and Krakowskie Zakłady Automatyki until the end of 2023.

Bombardier Transportation (ZWUS) Polska and Krakowskie Zakłady Automatyki will install the ERTMS Level 2 solution on the 210-kilometre section of the Central Rail Line between stations of Korytów to Zawiercie. The contract is worth 314 million Zlotys (over 75 million Euros). ERTMS will be deployed together track modernisation that will allow the Polish railway infrastructure manager PKP PLK to increase the train speed on this route from 200 to 250 kilometres per hour.

“The deployment of the ERTMS/ETCS Level 2 system is another PLK’s investment on the important mainline. The technical station in Idzikowice is currently being modernised, this will improve train travel. We are recontructing and constructing the collision-free intersections to adapt the Central Rail Line to the safe traffic at a speed up to 250 kilometres per hour. The investment on the line will also result in more efficient rail traffic management,” said Ireneusz Merchel, CEO of PKP PLK.

Traffic control

As a part of the investment, Bombardier Transportation (ZWUS) Polska and Krakowskie Zakłady Automatyki will equip the stations of Psary, Góra Włodowska and Knapówka with new train traffic control devices. Moreover, the new local control centre (LCS) will be introduced. It will monitor the train traffic on the section between Korytów and Zawiercie. Also, LCS will be equipped with a simulator of railway traffic control devices. The modernisation project of the Central Rail Line includes the installation of the GSM-R wireless communication system and modern IT technologies on the route.
