Norway: fatal derailment on key route raises questions about landslide threat
It’s been a hard few weeks in terms of train derailments for Europe. First, there was the accident in Madrid’s high-speed tunnel. Then there was the fatal head-on collision 48 hours later in Wales. Just four days afterwards, a driver was killed in Norway after rockfall derailed a passenger train in the north. The crucial rail link is still closed, and the threat of further landslides has put pressure on the clean-up operation. Norway’s state rail company Bane NOR offers the latest information on the crash, including how it came to sign off on the route’s safety amid a fast rising rate of landslides in the mountainous region.
