EU report says rail liberalisation pays off but is it biased?
According to a new European Commission study on rail privatisation, the EU-backed liberalisation of the continent’s railways has resulted in “significant reductions” in ticket prices for passengers. Italy, for example, saw more than a 30 per cent drop in ticket costs. With the bloc’s executive pushing hard for competition, it is not surprising the report draws positive conclusions. But do the short-term gains of liberalisation mask the longer-term pitfalls?
