Railway services Germany disrupted due to strikes

German railway workers staged a four-hour strike this morning from 5-9am. Local, regional and long-distance train traffic has been affected, for passengers and freight transport. At 9am strains started moving again, but long-distance travel will face delays all day long, according to Deutsche Bahn (DB).

“The effects on regional traffic, especially in the severely affected regions such as Bavaria and North Rhine-Westphalia, can still drag on throughout the day”, infrastructure manager Deutsche Bahn (DB) noted this morning. Trains in the maintenance facilities could not be serviced as planned, and in many cases, trains and personnel were not available. To make things worse, the strike also affected the information systems, due to which the effects of the strike could not be communicated properly, the company added.

The strike

The strike was held by workers union EVG in order to step up pressure in a pay dispute with DB. According to the union, DH had left the negotiating table this weekend, but DB countered this stating: “Who negotiates, must be ready to turn to the other party. DB has asked the EVG to continue negotiations this afternoon.”
